KUCHING, March 19: Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has called on Sarawakian youth to dare to dream big, urging them not merely to gaze at the stars, but to venture boldly into the space sector as part of the State’s future economy.
In his Hari Raya Aidilfitri message today, he said Sarawak is actively exploring aerospace development, including small satellite technologies such as CubeSats, opening new frontiers for young talent.
He stressed that this direction will enable Sarawakian youth to take part in space engineering, satellite data analysis, and the application of space technology across key sectors such as agriculture, environmental monitoring, disaster management, and urban planning.
“We want our young people to be bold in their ambitions, not just to admire the stars, but to explore and harness them for the benefit of society,” he said.
Abang Johari added that the push into aerospace complements Sarawak’s broader strategy to build a high-technology economy, alongside advancements in semiconductors, innovation, and digital transformation.
In the semiconductor sector, he noted that proactive steps have been taken to build local expertise, including sending three outstanding Sarawakian students to pursue Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) studies in semiconductor fields at the University of Bristol, United Kingdom.
He emphasised that the initiative is a long-term investment to develop homegrown experts capable of supporting Sarawak’s semiconductor industry, with the aim of establishing a strong high-technology ecosystem spanning research and development (R&D), chip design, manufacturing, and industrial applications.
“With our own talent and capabilities, I am confident Sarawak can position itself as a trusted player in the global chip supply chain, which continues to expand in the era of artificial intelligence,” he said.
He underscored that empowering youth in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) remains crucial to positioning Sarawak competitively in emerging global industries, supported by the State government’s strong commitment to human capital development.
Through the Free Tertiary Education Sarawak (FTES) initiative, he said opportunities are being expanded for students from low- and middle-income families to pursue higher education at State-owned institutions without financial burden.
“Education is the key to social mobility. We do not want any Sarawakian child to be left behind due to financial constraints.
“We aim to produce engineers, scientists, technologists, doctors, teachers, and professionals who will drive Sarawak’s progress now and in the future,” he added.
At the same time, he said the Sarawak government continues to strengthen the renewable energy sector, including hydropower, solar, and hydrogen, as the foundation of a sustainable green economy.
“We aim to position Sarawak as a regional clean energy hub, attracting high-quality investments while creating high-skilled job opportunities for our people,” he said.
He added that the development of basic infrastructure remains a priority, including roads, bridges, rural water and electricity supply, as well as healthcare and education facilities, to ensure balanced and inclusive development across the State.
Amid the pursuit of progress, Abang Johari stressed that unity and harmony must remain at the core of Sarawak’s strength.
He said Aidilfitri is a meaningful occasion to strengthen bonds, seek forgiveness, and celebrate the diversity that defines Sarawak, with the tradition of open houses reflecting inclusivity and goodwill among people of different races and religions.
“This is our uniqueness, living in diversity, yet united in one shared spirit,” he said.
In closing, he and the Sarawak government leadership sought forgiveness for any shortcomings and mistakes.
“I am fully aware that the responsibility entrusted to me is immense. God willing, I will continue to serve with full commitment and integrity to ensure Sarawak progresses as a prosperous, progressive, and respected region,” he said.
As a mark of respect to his late wife Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tun Tuanku Bujang, who passed away less than a year ago, he also announced that he and his family will not be hosting an Aidilfitri open house this year.
“Nevertheless, my family and I wish everyone Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Maaf Zahir dan Batin. May this Syawal bring happiness, strengthen unity, and increase blessings in all our lives.
“May Sarawak continue to remain peaceful, stable, progressive, and prosperous for present and future generations,” he said. — DayakDaily
