KUCHING, March 17: Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) will welcome 30 students as the inaugural cohort of its newly established Faculty of Law, starting this September, with priority given to Sarawakian students.
The announcement was made during a courtesy visit to Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, by a Unimas delegation led by board chairman Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Sulong Matjeraie.
In a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news, Unimas Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Ahmad Hata Rasit said the Faculty of Law was established to strengthen legal education in Sarawak, particularly in areas such as Customary Law, the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), and economic development issues including state and international borders.
“The faculty will focus on three main pillars: research on Customary Law, the establishment of a centre for customary and historical studies, and exploration of international legal aspects in technology, including carbon capture systems,” he explained during a press conference at Satria Pertiwi Complex today.
Ahmad added that the new faculty would design programmes relevant to current needs, aligned with Sarawak’s development agenda, and enhance opportunities for local students in the legal field.
The courtesy visit also provided a platform for the university to showcase recent academic and institutional achievements, reinforcing its commitment to advancing higher education in Sarawak.
Present at the session were the Dean of the Faculty of Law, Johan Shamsudin Sabaruddin and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Fitri Suraya Mohamad Hapni Joblie. — DayakDaily
