MIRI (Dec 6): Nearly 100 per cent of the Mulu constituency now enjoys 24-hour electricity supply under the Sarawak Alternative Rural Electrification Scheme (Sares), said Mulu assemblyman Datuk Gerawat Gala.

He said driven by government allocations amounting to billions of ringgit, the constituency has seen significant improvements in basic amenities and large-scale development which have brought tangible changes to the lives of rural communities.

“Clean water supply has also been extended to many areas, including remote settlements such as Puyut and Lubok Nibong, through the government’s continuous efforts since 2016,” he said when officiating at a pre-Christmas gathering organised by Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Mulu here on Friday.

Gerawat, who is a deputy minister in the Premier’s Department, added that 21 water supply projects are currently being planned and implemented under the Highland Development Agency (HDA) in the constituency.

On connectivity, he noted that more than 90 per cent of Mulu now has access to mobile and internet services.

However, he acknowledged that several locations still experience unstable coverage due to reliance on satellite systems.

Gerawat also highlighted the state Cabinet’s recent approval for the takeover of abandoned logging roads in Ulu Baram to be gazetted as state roads — a move he said will enable systematic maintenance and upgrading works, including the construction of 17 new steel bridges.
