SIBU (Feb 25): The Sibu Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCCI) has underscored the need for stronger engagement between the government and the business community to navigate an increasingly uncertain economic environment.
Speaking at the 2026 Chinese New Year Tea Reception on Tuesday, organising chairman Ling Soon King said rapid economic shifts have placed businesses under growing pressure from structural changes, rising costs and market volatility, making effective communication and policy alignment more crucial than ever.
He said the chamber plays a vital role not only in supporting local enterprises, but also in serving as a bridge between businesses and policymakers to ensure industry concerns are heard and addressed.
“We hope policies that respond to the needs of businesses can be effectively implemented,” he said, adding that the gathering was more than a festive occasion, but a platform for dialogue, cooperation and the exchange of perspectives valuable to the local commercial sector.
Ling described the reception as a symbol of sincerity, harmony and trust, expressing hope that such engagements would help generate positive momentum for Sibu’s economic development.
He also thanked the chamber’s honorary leaders, advisors, members and long-time supporters for their steady contributions.
Among those present were Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Datuk Michael Tiang; Sibu Municipal Council chairman Clarence Ting; political secretary to the Premier of Sarawak Joshua Ting; Bawang Assan assemblyman Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh; and SCCCI chairman Datuk Lau Cheng Kiong.
