OYA (Feb 12): The Sarawak government remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of the education community through the implementation of a riverbank erosion mitigation project and upgrading works at SJKC Yak Tee here.

State Minister of Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah officiated the completion of the projects on Tuesday, underscoring the state’s continued efforts to provide a safer and more conducive learning environment, particularly in areas prone to erosion.

The riverbank erosion control project and additional works at Sungai Parit, Oya, were conducted with an allocation of RM500,000 under the 2022 Rural Transformation Programme (RTP).
The project was fully implemented from April to December 2024.

In addition, the school’s basketball court facilities were upgraded in several phases under the Minor Rural Project (MRP).

These included the construction of a perimeter fence costing RM12,000 (MRP 2021), repainting works amounting to RM8,000 (MRP 2024), and an additional allocation of RM8,000 (MRP 2025) to ensure the facility remains safe and in good condition.

Following the officiating ceremony, Fatimah attended the Chinese New Year (CNY) 2026 celebration held at the school’s basketball court, which took place in a lively atmosphere and reflected the harmony of Sarawak’s multiracial community.

In her speech, she said the Chinese New Year celebration is not only significant to the Chinese community but also serves as a symbol of unity and harmony among Sarawak’s diverse society, which upholds the values of tolerance, mutual respect and togetherness.

“This programme provides opportunities for the community to strengthen ties, enhance cultural understanding and foster a strong spirit of unity, particularly among the younger generation,” Fatimah said in Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) report.

Also present were Dalat District Education officer Magdaline Jon; SJKC Yak Tee Oya headmistress Lo Leh Na; school board chairman Ong Sii Wei; JKKK Pasar Oya chairman Kapitan Ong Hock Hoon; PIBG chairman Muhamad Izwan Ismail; as well as school administrators, teachers and members of the school community.
