KUCHING (April 10): A new water treatment plant with a capacity of five million litres per day (MLD) will be built in Sebuyau to strengthen water supply in the area.

According to a report by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), State Minister of Utility and Telecommunication Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi said the project had been approved.

“It is currently at the contractor selection stage.

“The new facility, which will utilise the acute water supply system, is intended to complement existing infrastructure while addressing rising demand.

“The plant in Sebuyau has a capacity of only 3.2 MLD, while Simunjan stands at 5MLD.

“However, both are still insufficient, especially during the dry season,” he told reporters after the ‘Berziarah di Desa’ programme held in conjunction with the MUT 2026 Aidilfitri open house in Sebuyau on Thursday.

At present, Sebuyau receives its main water supply from the Batu Kitang water treatment plant, in addition to smaller existing facilities in Sebuyau and Simunjan.

Meanwhile, Julaihi said a separate 5MLD water treatment plant in Sebangan, which had been approved earlier, was currently under construction and should reach completion by July.

The Sebuyau assemblyman also urged the public to better understand the provisions under the Sarawak Water Ordinance and Electricity Ordinance to avoid misunderstandings.

“The utility providers are only responsible up to the meter point.

“Beyond the meter, maintenance is the responsibility of the property owner or building management,” he said.
