KUCHING (April 9): A section of the Second Trunk Road (STR) cutting through Ulu Sebuyau National Park could be developed into a new eco-tourism attraction in Sarawak, said Datuk Len Talif Salleh.
The State Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Urban Development said the initiative reflects the state’s ability to develop modern infrastructure while preserving its natural heritage.
“I hope the Public Work Departments will include lay-bys along the roadside so visitors can stop and enjoy the scenic views of the park,” he said during the Tabung Ekonomi Gagasan Anak Sarawak ‘Nostalgia Raya’ open house here.
Len Talif added that the decision to construct an elevated highway instead of a conventional road was made specifically to protect the park’s ecosystem, which is home to orangutans in the Payak Gambut area.
“We are fully aware of the environmental impact of this road. This is one of the state government’s initiatives to minimise disruption to the ecosystem.
“It is the first time we are adopting such an approach,” he said.
He also said that public participation is essential in maintaining the cleanliness in the area, pointing to littering issues along the Pan Borneo Highway.
“We need to educate the public not to dispose of rubbish irresponsibly. This forms part of the broader educational effort that must be practised.”
Len Talif also stressed that relevant agencies must play their part by providing proper waste disposal facilities along the highway.
“The responsible bodies should ensure proper garbage facilities are made available along the route,” he added.
