KUCHING (Sept 15): The ‘Segulai Sejalai Sarawak Fun Run’ is set for flag-off this Nov 16.
The event is organised by the Post-Graduate Association of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (Pgmed) at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas), in connection with World Diabetes Day on Nov 14.
Pgmed Unimas president Dr Simon Channing Nub said the organiser was eyeing a turnout of 1,000 people.
“We hope that this could be the wind of change for the community to foster healthier lifestyle habits,” said Dr Simon.
The event will have 10km, 5km and 3km categories, covering routes around Unimas main campus in Kota Samarahan.
Meanwhile, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences dean Prof Dr Asri Said hailed the event as ‘an opportunity to raise awareness of diabetes, while encouraging healthy habits’.
“The objective goes beyond promoting healthy, active lifestyle as it also sets out to cultivate a culture of safe and enjoyable marathons in Sarawak.
“Additionally, there will be exhibition and sales booths, as well as a lucky draw,” he added.
Unimas vice-chancellor Prof Dr Ahmad Hata Rasit remarked: “This initiative aligns with the university’s commitment of promoting well-being beyond academic activities.
“As we continue to face rising health issues such as diabetes, it is crucial to encourage non-academic events that prioritise well-being.
“I hope this fun run would become a lasting tradition at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, inspiring everyone to have healthier habits for years to come,” he said.
