KUCHING (Feb 15): The Semarak Ramadan programme kicked off on a spirited note with the launch of the Agro Sarawakku Sayang sales and an early Ramadan bazaar at Medan Niaga Satok here today.

Chief Political Secretary to the Sarawak Premier Dato Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman said the initiative, held in collaboration with the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Fama), reflects the Sarawak government’s continued commitment to easing the people’s cost of living, especially in the lead-up to Ramadan.

“Under the Agro Madani sales, the state government has channelled allocations to Fama to subsidise essential food items, namely chicken, eggs and rice, enabling them to be sold at lower prices to the local community,” he told reporters after a tour around the Ramadan bazaar.

Meanwhile, State Fama director Norsalawaty Abdul Kadir said special promotions have been lined up for the public.

“For today’s special promotion, we are offering 300 chickens and 300 trays of eggs. We have also prepared around 300 Agro Madani combo packs comprising 5kg of rice, sugar and Fama honey,” she said.

She added that apart from the Agro Sarawakku Sayang sales, 840 traders are operating at the existing lots in Medan Niaga Satok, offering a variety of items including fish, chicken, meat and other food products.

The Agro Madani sales run from Feb 7 to 18, while the Ramadan bazaar — introduced earlier than usual this year — begins today.

Fazzrudin, who is also the Tupong assemblyman, said the early start allows traders to familiarise themselves and make necessary preparations ahead of Ramadan, while giving visitors the opportunity to sample food offerings in advance.

“The bazaar features a diverse range of categories, including 14 beverage lots, 18 fried food lots, 17 cooked dish lots, 15 kuih (traditional cakes) lots and eight grilled food lots,” he said.

He stressed that the programme is not a one-off initiative, noting that similar efforts had been organised since last year and would continue this year as part of the state government’s commitment to give back to the people.

“This is part of the Sarawak government’s continuous effort to assist the people in terms of welfare and livelihood,” he added.
