MIRI, Apr 25: A proposal has been put forward to develop the Miri Waterfront into a key urban landmark, with integrated recreational spaces aimed at enhancing the city’s appeal as a tourism destination.
Senadin assemblyman Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin said the idea draws inspiration from successful waterfront developments such as Kuching Waterfront, which has become a major attraction for both locals and visitors.
“I believe Miri has the same potential to create an iconic public space that can be enjoyed by the people while attracting visitors from within and outside Sarawak,” he said during the Miri-level Sarawakku Sayang 2026 programme here.
Lee, who is also Sarawak Minister of Transport, said there was also potential to develop existing water retention ponds into integrated recreational and tourism areas.
He said with proper planning, these areas could accommodate activities such as walking, cycling and light water-based recreation, while continuing to function as flood mitigation infrastructure.
“These initiatives will not only beautify Miri but also improve the quality of life for residents and strengthen the city’s tourism appeal,” he added.
Meanwhile, Lee said upgrading works at the Sungai Tujoh Immigration, Customs, Quarantine, and Security (ICQS) Complex are nearing completion and are expected to be fully operational by May 1.
He said the project is expected to significantly reduce congestion at the border, where waiting times have previously reached between three and five hours.
In addition, Lee said Miri Airport will undergo a comprehensive upgrading and expansion exercise beginning this year, with completion expected within 36 months.
“This is not just an airport upgrade, but an important step in preparing Miri as an international gateway,” he said.
