KUCHING (Oct 25): The deities Guangze Zunwang and Miaoying Xianfei, from Fujian, China will arrive at the Kuching Hokkien Association (KHA) Hong San Si temple this Nov 5.

The blessing tour for the deities, commonly known as ‘Seng Gong’ and ‘Seng Ma’, respectively, began in Kuala Lumpur, followed by Perak and Penang, then in Kuching and finally in Sabah.

“This marks the first time in a century that ancestral deities have travelled south, and since it coincides with the Year of the Dragon, it seems that this event was destined,” said KHA president Richard Wee.

Speaking at a press conference, he explained the event, originally planned for 2020, was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic and is now taking place in November.

He said the event is popular internationally and recognised by the Sarawak government as a cultural heritage event.

“This event is widely known not only locally, but also in Singapore, Brunei, Indonesia, China and Taiwan.

“It has been recognised as a cultural heritage event and included in the annual calendar of the Tourism Ministry for promotion.

“Thus, I sincerely call upon all devotees to participate in this grand celebration and share in the blessings,” said Wee.

Various performances, such as lion and dragon dances, will be staged throughout the event, from 7pm to 10pm.

“Devotees who are interested in showcasing their performances are urged to come forward and register at the association,” said Wee, adding that the closing date for registration is Nov 2.

“Upon the arrival of the statues at the Hong San Si temple, there will be a Chinese opera as well as lion and dragon dances at night.

“The next day at 10.45am, the temple will be open to the public for worship and there will be an eye-dotting ceremony.

“On the third and fourth day, the temple will open at 6.30am for worship, along with more local cultural performances.

“The blessing tour at Kuching will conclude with the statues being sent to the Kuching International Airport for their final stop in Sabah,” he added.

Also present at the press conference was the Associated Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (ACCCIM) president Tan Sri Dato Low Kian Chuan.
