PETALING JAYA:

Several matters were discussed and resolved following a meeting between Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Sarawak premier Abang Johari Openg in Kuching today.

Abang Johari said Anwar’s trip to Sarawak allowed for important discussions to be held between the federal and state governments, Berita Harian reported.

He said they exchanged views and sought solutions to the matters raised, adding that this was ultimately for the people’s benefit.

“With the spirit of solidarity between the federal and Sarawak governments, it appears that several matters that were discussed were resolved well,” he was quoted as saying.

The meeting between the two leaders comes ahead of a Federal Court decision on Monday concerning Petronas’s application for leave to seek clarity on the applicable regulatory framework governing its Sarawak operations.

Separately, the Sarawak government is challenging the validity and applicability of three federal laws – the Petroleum Development Act 1974, the Continental Shelf Act 1966, and the Petroleum Mining Act 1966.

The state is also seeking health autonomy and greater regulatory authority over tourism, among others, as part of regaining its rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963.

While Abang Johari did not disclose what matters were resolved during his discussions with Anwar, he said they touched on holding talks with leaders of Muslim countries in light of the unrest in the Middle East.

He believed that Anwar could contribute to efforts to de-escalate the situation and bring stability back to the region, and internationally.
