KUCHING: The Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) has urged members of the public to be vigilant and cautious of their surroundings following recent crocodile attacks.

In a statement on its Facebook page, SFC warned that continuous rain has led to rising water levels, which may bring crocodiles closer to residential areas.

“Crocodiles will surface with rising water levels and can often be found near drains or riverbanks.

“In light of this, the public are advised to avoid walking or letting children play near monsoon drains or riverbanks during heavy rain or floods.”

SFC photo show reminders to avoid areas of potential crocodile sightings and urging the public to adhere to signboards of crocodile dangers.

SFC also urged the public to stay informed about crocodile-related incidents and tips to avoid areas of potential crocodile sightings.

“Take extra care of your pets during this rainy season, and do not let them roam freely.

“Always keep emergency numbers handy so that they are easy to contact in case of an incident.”

Recently, two crocodile attacks have been reported – one in Tatau and another in Kuala Baram.

In Tatau, six-year-old Cicilia Julan Intik was attacked by a crocodile while bathing with her family in a river at Kampung Seberang Pasar Lama on Wednesday (Sept 18).

The search and rescue (SAR) operation for Cicilia entered its sixth day, Monday (Sept 23), with no new leads on her whereabouts.

Meanwhile, in Kuala Baram, 59-year-old Minggu Ikum was attacked by a crocodile while checking fish nets in a river at Mile 4 on Sunday (Sept 22).

On Monday, at around 1.45pm, authorities discovered the body of Minggu afloat in the river, about 4km from the SAR control post. Unfortunately, he was found without his left arm and leg.
