SIBU (Feb 17): After more than 20 years of remaining idle and underutilised, the long-designated park at Apollo Road here is finally being revived following redevelopment works initiated last year.

Sarawak Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government Michael Tiang said the site, although set aside as a neighbourhood park more than two decades ago, had never been properly developed and remained in poor condition for many years.

He said engagement sessions with residents revealed strong support for restoring the open space.

Based on the feedback gathered, improvement works began in 2025, including earth-filling and the installation of basic infrastructure to prepare the park for further development.

According to him, the ongoing effort aims to transform the area into a complete recreational facility equipped with features for all age groups.

Planned upgrades include a park gym, children’s playground components, and amenities suited for senior citizens.

“This is not the complete version of the park yet, but we are building it step by step. Once fully completed, this will be a place where kids, parents and seniors can all come together,” he said during the Apollo Park Lunar New Year Lighting Ceremony and BBQ Gathering on Sunday.

Tiang noted that since improvement works began, the park has become an active community space.

Residents from Apollo Road and neighbouring areas have returned to the site, with many participating in the festive BBQ gathering, the second held since redevelopment started.

He said the park’s revival has helped neighbours reconnect after years of limited interaction caused by the park’s neglected state.

“When children come to the park, their parents follow. When parents meet, community spirit grows.

“This is exactly what we want to achieve, helping young people put down their devices and enjoy open space together,” he added.

Tiang also extended Lunar New Year greetings to the community, wishing them joy and togetherness throughout the festive season.
