SIBU (Feb 26): The eighth edition of Sibu’s iconic mass breaking-of-fast event Lan Berambeh Sungkei 2026 is set to welcome a crowd of 25,000 people at Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang Phase 1 this March 7.

Sibu Resident Abang Mohamad Porkan Abang Budiman said the programme has grown steadily since its inception in 2017.

“The programme was pioneered by State Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee, who also serves as patron of the event.

“It was first held in 2017 as an annual programme but was not organised in 2020 and 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The event resumed in 2022 with its fourth edition,” he told a press conference here.

He added that attendance has steadily increased over the years: 10,000 people in 2023, more than 15,000 in 2024, and over 20,000 in 2025.

Organised by Sibu Division’s permanent committee for Muslim Festivities in collaboration with Nangka Service Centre and RTM Sarawak, the event will begin at 4pm and adopts a potluck concept where participants bring their own dishes to share, reflecting a long-standing community tradition.

The programme is open to government and private agencies, local communities, NGOs, and residents from Sibu Division and neighbouring districts including Mukah, Kapit, Sarikei, and Bintulu, as well as visitors from across Sarawak, Brunei, and Indonesia.

Members of the public are encouraged to attend in traditional attire in line with this year’s theme, Busana Tradisional.

Abang Mohamad Porkan said the event aims to promote cultural tolerance and unity among Sarawakians while positioning Sibu as a vibrant destination for visitors from other districts, states, and neighbouring countries.

State Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah is expected to attend as the guest of honor.

This year’s event will also serve as the closing venue for RTM Sarawak’s Ramadan Tour.

Activities include the Quran Hours Programme in conjunction with Nuzul Al-Quran Night, involving 300 participants in Quran recitation and a Khatamal Al Quran ceremony with 21 agencies, followed by congregational Maghrib prayers at the main stage.

The event will feature Ramadan and charity stalls distributing complimentary dishes such as bubur pedas, bubur lambuk, dates, kolo mee, and chicken rice, alongside an aid presentation ceremony for the asnaf community and Jualan Rahmah sales from several supermarkets.

Competitions will include a traditional attire contest, a Teter Beduk drum-beating competition associated with Ramadan and Aidilfitri in Sarawak, and meriam buluh and bedil (bamboo cannon) competitions aimed at reviving traditional festive games.

Abang Mohamad Porkan called on the public to gather at Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang Phase 1 and bring their own dishes to share with family and friends.

“Visitors from neighbouring divisions such as Sarikei, Kapit and Mukah, as well as other parts of Sarawak and beyond, are warmly welcomed to further enliven the event,” he said.
