Sibu to host state National Day do

SIBU: The state-level National Day celebration with the theme ‘Jiwa Merdeka’ showcasing patriotism and national unity will be held here on Aug 31.

According to Minister in the Premier’s Department, Datuk Seri John Sikie Tayai the theme has a deep meaning, reminding the people about the importance of fostering the spirit of independence in every aspect of life.

“Let us all, with full pride and responsibility, continue to strive and contribute to national development and maintain the harmony that we have built.

“With the spirit of unity and hard work, nothing is impossible for us to achieve,” he said in a press conference held at a renowned hotel here today.

The Kakus assemblyman also said that the celebration was not only to celebrate past achievements but also to build a glorious and prosperous future.

“A colourful display of firework and stage show featuring artists such as Floor 88 band will take place at the town square at 8 pm on August 30,” he added.

On August 31, Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg will join more than 5,000 people for a 2.4km Fun Walk that start at the town square as early as 7 am.

After that,  Wan Junaidi and Abang Johari will proceed to the main event, the National Day Assembly which will commence at 11 am at Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud Chancellor Hall, University of Technology Sarawak (UTS).

“The main event is expected to be attended by Wan Junaidi’s wife Toh Puan Fauziah Mohd Sanusi, Abang Johari’s wife Puan Sri Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tun Tuanku Bujang, Sarawak Cabinet members and other dignitaries,” said Sikie.

Sikie, who is the minister-in-charge of the celebration, also called on business owners including Sibu residents to fly the Jalur Gemilang and the Sarawak flag.

Among those present during the press conference yesterday were Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee, Sibu Division Resident Abang Mohamad Porkan Abang Budiman and Sarawak Protocol, Ceremonial and Event Management Unit director Hamdan Sharbini.
