SIBU (Oct 3): A trader in his 40s lodged a police report on Tuesday after he lost RM106,680 to a non-existent car sale online.
Sibu police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili said the victim saw a car sale advertisement on a Facebook page called ‘Nor Motorsport’ on Sept 16.
“He contacted a number using the name Nor Vincent on the advertisement and Jordan Liew through WhatsApp to enquire about a four-wheel drive car offered at RM97,800 with an instalment payment of RM1,630 per month for five years.
“The suspect offered to sell the car to the victim for RM85,000 if he was interested. The victim was also required to fill in personal information such as full name, address, identification card, and telephone numbers, as well as email,” he said in a statement.
Zulkipli said on Sept 21, the victim expressed his interest in the offer and provided his wife’s personal details together with a photo of his wife’s identification card and driving licence to the suspect.
The victim also transferred a total of RM106,680 to four different bank accounts in 24 transactions, he said.
“Despite the amount, the suspect instructed the victim to transfer another RM7,800 to pay for the car delivery process.
“He became suspicious before realising it was a scam and proceeded to lodge a police report,” said Zulkipli.
The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code.
Zulkipli also advised the public not to be easily deceived by sales of goods online at low prices, especially through social media.
He said they should check carefully to avoid being duped.
