Sikie highlights a point in his ministerial winding-up speech to Deputy Minister of Utili-ty and Telecommunication Datuk Liwan Lagang.
KUCHING (Dec 2): The Sarawak government will roll out the e-Firearm System, a new digital platform to strengthen the management, monitoring and regulation of licensed fire-arms in the state, said Dato Sri John Sikie Tayai.
The Minister in the Premier’s Department said the digital system is part of the state’s commitment to modernise governance, enhance security administration and support technology-driven public service delivery.
“The new centralised database system for shotgun licence management is expected to be fully used starting next year. The system will streamline firearm licence records, im-prove data accuracy, and enable better coordination among enforcement agencies.
“The launch of this system marks an important step towards strengthening the state’s safety and regulatory ecosystem,” he said in his ministerial winding-up speech.
“It will enable more effective monitoring of licensed firearms, improve transparency and support enforcement efforts to uphold public safety.”
Sikie said the digital platform will also enhance procedures related to firearm registra-tion, renewal and documentation, thus reducing administrative delays and minimising potential errors.
Meanwhile, he also announced that the Sarawak Coastguard (SCG) will continue to expand its operational capabilities, with additional assets, facilities and manpower to be acquired in phases.
He said the expansion is necessary to strengthen maritime surveillance, safeguard coastal communities, and support enforcement efforts in state waters, particularly with increasing economic activity along Sarawak’s maritime zones.
According to him, the SCG has been steadily building capacity since its establishment, and the government remains committed to ensuring that the force is adequately equipped to carry out patrols, conduct search-and-rescue operations and support in-ter-agency maritime enforcement.
“The expansion of the Sarawak Coastguard will enhance the state’s ability to protect its maritime interests, ensure the safety of our coastal areas, and support enforce-ment against illegal fishing, smuggling and other maritime offences,” he said.
