Singapore Institute of Management Campus
KUALA LUMPUR (April 4): SIM Global Education, the global education arm of Singapore Institute of Management, continues to expand opportunities for students seeking internationally recognised qualifications through overseas study options that are closer to home and more accessible for Malaysian students. .
With Singapore Institute of Management’s legacy spanning six decades in education, SIM Global Education has built a strong reputation for delivering high-quality education through trusted partnerships with globally ranked universities, enabling students to access internationally recognised academic programmes closer to home.
For many students and families in East Malaysia, the dream of earning an internationally recognised degree often comes with concerns about affordability, distance and support systems.
SIM Global Education addresses these concerns by offering academic pathways that combine global academic standards with strong local support in Singapore, a destination that remains geographically close, culturally familiar and highly regarded for its education ecosystem.

Professor Jorg Bley
According to Professor Jorg Bley, Provost of SIM Global Education, the institution has spent decades developing a transnational education model that allows students to benefit from leading global universities while studying within a supportive environment in Singapore.
“SIM Global Education enables students to earn internationally recognised degrees from leading universities in the United Kingdom, the United States and Australia while studying in Singapore, close to home,” he said.
“As a pioneer in transnational education, we have built long-standing partnerships with 10 universities, including the University of London and RMIT University for nearly 40 years.”
These partnerships also include globally respected institutions such as the University of Birmingham, the University of Wollongong, Cardiff University and the University at Buffalo, many of which are ranked among the QS Top 200 universities worldwide.
Through these collaborations, students follow curricula fully aligned with the academic standards and quality assurance frameworks of the partner universities’ home campuses.
“This ensures that the qualifications our students earn are recognised worldwide, while fly-in faculty from our partner universities deliver lectures in Singapore to enrich the learning experience and maintain the global authenticity of our programmes,” Prof. Bley explained.
While academic excellence remains central to SIM’s model, the institution also places strong emphasis on comprehensive support to help students thrive both academically and personally. From the moment international students arrive in Singapore, they are supported through a structured ecosystem designed to ease their transition into university life.
The International Student Office (ISO) assists students with immigration matters, accommodation arrangements and orientation programmes, ensuring they feel settled in their new environment.
At the same time, Student Learning support initiatives help strengthen critical skills such as analytical thinking, academic writing and effective study strategies.
Beyond the classroom, SIM GE encourages holistic student development through vibrant campus life.
Students have access to a wide range of clubs, leadership opportunities and co-curricular activities that allow them to develop interpersonal and leadership skills alongside their academic pursuits.
Preparing graduates for the workforce is another major priority. Through SIM Career Connect, students gain exposure to industry networks, internships and professional development opportunities that support their transition into the workforce.
One of the key initiatives under Career Connect is CareerSense, an integrated career development platform that provides personalised career insights based on students’ values, interests, personality and skills.
The platform’s Employability Index helps students identify their strengths, recognise areas for improvement and plan their career paths.
“CareerSense connects students with career coaches, workshops, internships and job opportunities tailored to their profiles, empowering them to take ownership of their professional journey and build the confidence needed to thrive in a competitive global workforce,” Prof. Bley said.
While global exposure and academic quality are major draws, financial accessibility is equally important for many families considering overseas education.
Recognising this, SIM Global Education offers a comprehensive range of scholarships to make international education more accessible to talented students across the region.
Among them is the SIM STARRR Award for new undergraduate students, which covers up to S$36,000 in tuition fees, living allowances and other support while recognising resilience, leadership and academic achievement.
SIM Global Education also offers Diploma Scholarships for high-achieving diploma students, providing up to 100 per cent of course fees depending on academic merit.
Additional support comes through the SIM Award and Sports and Artistic Talent Award, each valued at S$15,000 for outstanding degree students, while the ASEAN Impact Award provides S$3,000 to recognise strong academic results and leadership potential among students from ASEAN countries.
“These scholarships are designed to make internationally recognised education more accessible and allow students to focus on their studies while preparing to graduate career-ready,” Prof. Bley said.
Beyond financial assistance, SIM ensures that its academic programmes remain aligned with the evolving needs of industries and employers.
This is achieved through applied learning experiences such as case studies, simulations, internships, corporate visits and engagements with industry professionals.
“Our programmes integrate practical learning opportunities that develop problem-solving, communication and digital capabilities which are skills that employers consistently look for in graduates,” Prof. Bley noted.
To further enhance employability, SIM offers micro-credential programmes and maintains strong industry partnerships to equip students with in-demand competencies including data science, analytics and advanced Excel skills.
The institution also continually refreshes its programme portfolio to reflect emerging fields such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, digital innovation and sustainability.
“Together, these efforts ensure our graduates leave with not only international qualifications but also practical experience and relevant skills for the modern workforce,” he added.
For students from East Malaysia, studying in Singapore offers a practical balance between international exposure and proximity to home.
“Singapore provides a safe, multicultural and well-connected environment, which reassures many parents while still allowing students to experience an international education,” Prof. Bley said.
This balance is something recent graduate and scholarship recipient Erine Tong from Sandakan experienced firsthand.
“I have always wanted to study abroad and Singapore felt like the perfect balance. The flight from Kota Kinabalu is only about two and a half hours, allowing me to study overseas while still staying relatively close to home,” she said.
Tong said the multicultural campus environment at SIM Global Education played a significant role in shaping her university experience.
“I interacted with classmates not only from Singapore and Malaysia, but also from countries such as Thailand, Russia, China, Japan, Myanmar, Vietnam and Indonesia. Through these friendships, I learned different perspectives and ways of thinking, which truly broadened my worldview,” she shared.
Beyond academics, Tong also benefited from SIM’s supportive learning environment and diverse co-curricular opportunities.
“SIM provides a very supportive and well-rounded environment, with close to 80 co-curricular activities that allow students to develop leadership and teamwork skills,” she said.
“Through student organisations, we planned and executed events ourselves, from contacting vendors to managing logistics, while mentors guided us along the way.”
Career preparation also played a key role in her journey.
“SIM Career Connect organises workshops on professional communication, resume building and workplace etiquette and students could book one-to-one consultations with career advisors for personalised feedback,” Tong said.
“Through one of the career fairs, I met recruiters and eventually secured my first full-time job opportunity in Singapore.”
Tong also gained valuable international exposure through leadership and mobility opportunities during her time at SIM Global Education, experiences that broadened her outlook and strengthened her personal development.
She shared that she had the opportunity to attend a leadership training programme in Indonesia with the Student Ambassador EXCO team, where participants engaged in team-based activities and interacted closely with local communities while completing various challenges.
“It was a valuable experience that strengthened our teamwork and cross-cultural communication skills,” she said.
In addition, Tong was selected to participate in the STEP Southeast Asia Youth Sports Leaders Camp, a 10-day regional leadership programme that brought together young sports leaders from across Southeast Asia.
During the camp, she met athletes and youth leaders from different countries while taking part in a wide range of leadership and sports-related activities.
“The experience helped me build strong friendships across borders and gave me a deeper appreciation of cultural diversity and regional collaboration,” she added.
Reflecting on her journey, Tong encouraged students and parents in East Malaysia who may be concerned about cost or distance when considering overseas education to explore options closer to home.
“For students in East Malaysia, studying in Singapore can be a very worthwhile option. The distance is relatively short, making it easier to stay connected with family while still gaining an international education experience,” she said.
She noted that Singapore’s safe and well-structured environment also provides reassurance for parents sending their children abroad for studies.
“Institutions like SIM Global Education allow students to obtain internationally recognised qualifications while studying in a multicultural and supportive learning environment. For me, it was a valuable experience that helped shape both my personal growth and career development,” Tong said.
