MIRI (Dec 21): Hard work, dedication, and strong values were the hallmarks celebrated at the Primary 6 graduation of SK St Joseph.

Councillor Leslie Lau, officiating on behalf of State Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Sebastian Ting, congratulated the some 100 pupils on completing their primary education.

He described the milestone as the closing of one chapter and the exciting start of a new journey, while reminding the pupils that education extends far beyond examination results.

“I am especially proud to note that 72 students achieved outstanding results consistently from Primary 1 to Primary 6.

“This is no easy feat, and it reflects the students’ hard work, the teachers’ dedication, and strong parental support,” he said.

Lau remarked that over six years, the students had learned not only academic skills but also essential life lessons in discipline, responsibility, and respect.

He encouraged the graduates to remain curious, kind, and resilient as they transition to secondary school, emphasising that Sarawak needs youth who are confident, skilled, and rooted in strong values.

Lau extended his appreciation to the parents for their sacrifices and support, underscoring that education is a true partnership between schools and families.

Touching on state initiatives, he reaffirmed the Sarawak government’s commitment to ensuring no child is left behind due to financial constraints.

This includes continued investment in school facilities, digital learning, and assistance programmes.

He highlighted a key upcoming policy in which Sarawak will provide free tertiary education for eligible programmes at state-owned universities — a move demonstrating the state’s long-term investment in education and human capital development.

Lau further expressed appreciation to the teachers of SK St Joseph for their dedication and called on both school and parents to instil patriotism and strong moral values in children.

Also present at the ceremony were SK St Joseph headmaster Henry Edward Tarang, Parent-Teacher Association chairman Goh Ser Seng, and St Joseph Alumni chairman Gerald Goh.
