SIBU (March 15): The Sarawak government’s Sumbangan Keperluan Asas Sarawak (SKAS) initiative reflects its commitment to helping the people cope with the rising cost of living.

Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Datuk Michael Tiang said the programme was introduced under the leadership of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg to help Sarawakians face the increasing cost of living.

“The initiative aims to support especially low- and middle-income families who are facing increasing expenses for daily necessities such as food and other household items,” said the Pelawan assemblyman when launching the SKAS programme for his constituency at Jumbo Grocer here on Saturday.

Under the programme, eligible recipients would receive digital vouchers that could be used to purchase essential items at participating outlets, including Jumbo Grocer.

Households with a monthly income of less than RM5,000 are eligible to receive up to RM950 annually through the SKAS assistance.

Tiang added: “The urban constituency has a diverse community, with many residents working hard daily to support their families.

“As the representative of Pelawan, I will continue to ensure that every initiative introduced by the Sarawak government reaches the people and benefits them.”

He also thanked community leaders, government agencies and the management of Jumbo Grocer for their cooperation in making the programme possible and helping disseminate information to the public.
