KUCHING (Aug 22): Sarawak’s 5G coverage is now at 62 per cent and targeted to reach 64.8 per cent by the end of this year, said Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) general manager Dato Dr Anderson Tiong.
He said 5G technology is the backbone of the state’s future economy and a key enabler of the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030 as well as Sarawak Digital Economy 2030.
“By integrating 5G into our telecommunication network, we are laying the groundwork for smarter cities, more efficient industries, and enhanced public services.
“This technology will empower our businesses, drive innovation in our education and healthcare sectors, and create new opportunities across urban and rural areas alike,” he said in his welcoming remarks at the Sarawak Telecommunication Development Townhall Session for Kuching, yesterday.
The session sought to explain to the general public the development of telecommunication in Sarawak, specifically 5G, as part of the state and national agenda to develop digital economy.
Sharing their insights were experts from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, Digital Nasional Berhad, and Malaysian Nuclear Agency.
Adding on, Tiong said collective dialogue and collaboration will ensure the successful and responsible deployment of 5G, aligning with the vision of a digitally inclusive and sustainable Sarawak.
“As we embark on this journey, it is crucial to address not only the opportunities but also the concerns that come with the deployment of 5G, particularly regarding its health implications.
“We understand that the introduction of any new technology brings questions and uncertainties. Rest assured our commitment to the well-being of our communities remains paramount.
“We are guided by rigorous scientific research and international standards to ensure that the rollout of 5G is both safe and beneficial for all,” he said.
Among those who attended the town hall session were Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian and Deputy Minister for Utility and Telecommunication Datuk Liwan Lagang.
