KUCHING: Small contractors should have access to work packages suited to their capacity under Sarawak Budget 2027 to help them grow and build experience, said the Sarawak Malaysian Malay Contractors Association (PKMM).

Its President, Datuk Ismail Su’ut said implementing agencies should consider contractors’ grades, capacity and specialisations when structuring project packages, subject to technical requirements and transparent procurement procedures.

“G1 and G2 contractors need access to suitable small work packages to build their track records and financial capacity,” he said in a statement today.

He said G3 to G5 contractors should have opportunities to expand through medium-sized projects and subcontracting, while G6 and G7 firms could compete for major projects, including through strategic joint ventures.

Ismail welcomed the state’s RM10.098-billion development allocation for 2027, including RM6.4 billion for rural development initiatives.

He said the RM742-million allocation for roads and bridges, alongside RM2.27 billion in alternative financing for major transport networks, could stimulate construction activity and local supply chains.

However, small contractors needed access to working capital to cover materials, wages, machinery and site expenses so they could complete projects on schedule, he said.

He also stressed the need to develop skilled local workers through training in civil engineering, welding, electrical work, machinery operation, site management and occupational safety.

PKMM was prepared to explore partnerships with CENTEXS, Sarawak Skills, CIDB and other agencies for industrial training, apprenticeships, job placements and upskilling.

“Job opportunities arising from development investment should also be filled by Sarawakians who have the skills and relevant certification,” he said.
