SIBU (March 9): Over 900 licensed coffeeshops here have achieved either Grade A or B grade for cleanliness, reflecting the overall satisfactory hygiene standards maintained by these local operators.
According to Sibu Municipal Council (SMC)’s public health, environment and municipal services standing committee deputy chairman Councillor Yiing Sy Huat, at present there is no premises with Grade C, following their upgrade to Grade B.
“Coffeeshops with Grade A are to undergo inspection once every two years; Grade B once a year; and Grade C, every six months.
“For those Grade C that have been upgraded to Grade B, we hope that they would continue improving and eventually achieve Grade A,” he told reporters on Monday when met during the inspection on coffeeshops under Zone 1, covering the town’s Central Business District (CBD) area.
Adding on, he expressed satisfaction over the cleanliness and hygiene standards observed at several coffeeshops during the checks.

Moreover, the councillor said the series of inspection this month would focus on Zone 1, Zone 2 and Zone 3.
“A sub-committee was set up last month, and after each inspection, any areas requiring improvement would be discussed within the committee to identify ways to help the coffeeshop operators enhance their standards.”
Yiing also reminded food handlers to always wear caps and aprons when handling food.
“Refrain from using plastic drinking straws; any found during inspection would be confiscated.”
It is estimated that there are more than 1,000 coffeeshops in Sibu, including those yet to obtain the relevant licences.
