SIBU (March 10): The Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) inspected eight public toilets on Tuesday to assess cleanliness, maintenance issues and overall usability.
SMC Standing Committee for Public Health, Environment and Municipal Services deputy chairman Councillor Yiing Sy Huat said the inspection was part of the council’s monitoring carried out every one to two months.
“Our aim is to ensure the toilets remain clean and functional, so the public can use these facilities comfortably,” he told reporters when met during the inspection.
The toilets inspected were those located at Jalan Khoo Peng Loong, SEDC Hawker Centre, Taman Kutien, Taman Permai, Sibu Bus Terminal, Taman Rejang, Taman Foochow, Medan Selera Bandung and Padang Penjara Sibu.
Yiing said consistent inspections were necessary to monitor sanitation levels and identify issues that required immediate attention.
During the visit, he also addressed feedback regarding the electricity supply at one of the locations, where lighting was non-functional for the past few months.
“Based on information from the contractor, the issue may be linked to equipment installed earlier. We will contact their representative for clarification, and we will also request Sarawak Water personnel to check the area, as the toilet is located beneath their premises,” he said.
He said the council would continue to monitor all public toilets under its jurisdiction to ensure they remain clean, safe and comfortable for users.
