SIBU (March 11): The Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) has been criticised for failing to address ongoing public safety and livelihood issues near the Bukit Assek Road old flats.
Sarawak Democratic Action Party (DAP) state committee member Stanley Chiew highlighted persistent problems such as overflowing garbage, poor drainage, and damaged roads, which have worsened with recent commercial development in the area.
“Several new shoplots have increased business activity, but the council has only placed a single medium-sized rubbish bin, which is insufficient.
“Garbage frequently overflows, attracting stray dogs and creating hazards, especially for schoolchildren who pass through the area daily,” he said in a statement.
He also pointed out that heavy rainfall often leads to flooding due to blocked drains, while potholes along Jalan Uk Daik pose risks to motorcyclists and cyclists at night.
Despite repeated complaints from residents and shop operators, the council has yet to take effective action.
Chiew urged the SMC to conduct immediate site inspections and implement solutions, including adding more large rubbish bins, capturing stray dogs, repairing potholes, and clearing drains.
“Waste management, road maintenance, and drainage are basic responsibilities of local government. The government must act promptly to safeguard residents’ quality of life and public safety,” he said.
