KUCHING, Mar 31: Children under 16 may still find ways to access social media by falsifying their age, warns Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD) Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, who acknowledged concerns over young users spending excessive time online while highlighting the internet’s potential educational benefits.
“Children have put effort into using these platforms and that is something we should acknowledge. Several countries have already restricted internet access for young users, especially on apps designed for those under 16.
“We can consider similar measures, and I think it could be a positive step,” he told reporters after a press conference on SPM results held at a hotel here, today.
He added that while the internet offers opportunities for learning and personal growth, enforcing restrictions can be challenging.
“A 10-year-old could easily claim to be 20. It is similar to how a thief cannot be fully prevented from stealing. There is always a way around restrictions,” he explained.
Nevertheless, the minister stressed that limiting access to content that is not beneficial or educational for younger users remains important as the goal is to protect them while still allowing them to benefit from the positive aspects of the internet.
He said this amid reports that Malaysia plans to ban social media for users under the age of 16 starting this year. — DayakDaily
