KUCHING, Oct 14: The installation of solar photovoltaic systems at government premises nationwide includes 283 rural schools in Sabah, Sarawak, and Peninsular Malaysia, alongside 46 Federal Government buildings, four Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) border posts and an Orang Asli village, Works Minister Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi said.
According to a TVS news report, Nanta said the initiative which involves the installation of installation of grid-connected photovoltaic (GCPV) and off-grid photovoltaic (OGPV) systems implemented by the Public Works Department (JKR), has the potential to save up to RM115 million annually in energy costs compared with conventional electricity usage.
“This reflects the government’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions while saving electricity costs for building operations.
“The energy cost savings are estimated to reach RM115 million annually, and we hope this programme can be continued in the future to further enhance savings,” he was reported as saying at a press conference after attending the Handover Ceremony for the Grid-Connected Solar Photovoltaic System Installation Project at Government Buildings, which was also attended by Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan at Wisma Putra today.
Meanwhile, TVS reported that in a separate statement, the Ministry of Works (KKR) informed that the five handed-over projects involve six government premises, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, National Water Research Institute of Malaysia (NAHRIM), Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz (HCTM), and the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID).
The projects feature a combined total installed capacity of 779.86 kilowatt-peak (kWp) and are capable of generating 1,070 megawatt-hours (MWh) of electricity annually.
The initiative aligns with the nation’s aspirations to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 and the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR).
