ADVERTISE HERE
KUCHING (Aug 19): A sea of 163 towering dragon joss sticks illuminated Jalan Sekama here yesterday as believers gathered to commemorate the Hungry Ghost Festival.
The event, held at the carpark of a coffeeshop off Jalan Sekama, attracted hundreds of believers and non-believers.
Accompanying the colossal joss sticks were mounds of joss paper, essential offerings for this traditional observance.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian graced the occasion as the guest of honour.
Among the guests were Kuching South Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng, Sarawak Federation of Chinese Associations president Datuk Richard Wee and Padawan Municipal Council chairman Tan Kai.
Together, they lit a gigantic dragon joss stick in a symbolic ritual, offering prayers for the nation’s unity, peace, prosperity, and progress.
The Chinese community here has been observing the Hungry Ghost Festival, widely known as Zhongyuan Jie or Yulan Jie, ever since their forefathers set foot in the city after a long journey from China.
