KUCHING (Dec 8): The Sarawak Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA) infused this year’s festive season with a renewed mission, emphasising the critical role of community involvement in the state’s ongoing battle against rabies.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the SSPCA Christmas Charity Bazaar at the Kuching South City Council’s (MBKS) community hall, mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng noted the event’s evolution beyond a mere fundraiser.

“It is a gathering that reflects the spirit of giving and our shared commitment to building a safer and more responsible Sarawak for both people and animals,” he said.

With rabies still requiring vigilance, he applauded the SSPCA’s ground-level contributions.

From backing mass vaccination drives to educating rural and urban communities on responsible pet ownership, he said SSPCA has played a meaningful role in ensuring that our strategies reach the ground where they matter most.

Wee underscored that persistence, collaboration, and compassion remain crucial, highlighting strengthened partnerships this year between the Department of Veterinary Services, Health Department, local councils, and animal-welfare groups.

“These joint efforts, whether through vaccination campaigns, community outreach, education or rapid response, are essential to keeping our neighbourhoods safe,” he said.

On a related note, he praised SSPCA’s humane animal population management work, particularly its neutering programmes in rural and marginalised communities.

“Every sterilisation performed today prevents countless unwanted litters tomorrow, reducing risks to both human and animal wellbeing.”

Wee also noted that MBKS is the first council to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with SSPCA to collaborate on its Capture, Neuter, Vaccinate and Return programme.

He further acknowledged the unwavering efforts of SSPCA volunteers, veterinarians, partners, and supporters.

“Your support strengthens the state’s wider strategy to control rabies and manage animal populations responsibly,” he added.

Proceeds from the bazaar, a key fundraising platform, will support vaccines, neutering clinics, rescue work, and awareness initiatives.

Also present at the event was SSPCA president Datin Sri Dona Drury Wee.
