KUCHING (Sept 27): St Joseph’s Private Primary School (SJPS), St Joseph’s Private Secondary School (SJPSS) and St Joseph’s International School (SJIS) have made a clean sweep of gold awards at the Malaysia International Wind Festival 2024.
Amidst fierce competition from among the nation’s musical elite, St Joseph’s schools stood out at the festival held at Kompleks Sukan Panasonic in Shah Alam, Selangor on Sept 21 and 22.
The schools won the gold awards in the Scholastic A Concert Percussion Ensemble category, the Scholastic A Showcase Class, alongside a gold award and a champion title for the Open Division Concert Band Premier Class through Kuching Wind Symphony – a band that consists of St Joseph’s schools students and alumni members.
“The event had gathered the best musical talents in wind orchestra and percussion ensembles from across Malaysia, and this incredible victory not only highlights the talent of these students but also the dedication of their teachers and coaches, as well as the support from their families and community,” said the schools in a joint statement yesterday.
“With relentless passion and dedication, these gifted young musicians captivated the audience and judges alike, earning their place in the spotlight,” it added.
St Joseph’s schools Student Development senior assistant Benedict JC Lo, who accompanied the students to the event, said the schools’ victory is a testament to the power of collaboration, determination, and excellence in arts education.
“This achievement is not just about winning awards; it’s about the journey and the incredible growth we have witnessed in these young musicians.
“We couldn’t be prouder of our students and they have shown that with teamwork, discipline, and a passion for music, anything is possible,” said Lo.
He also attributed this feat to Wilson Tan Joo Lung, the visionary band director, whose leadership and commitment played a pivotal role in guiding the young musicians to succeed.
“This victory also reflects Sarawak’s growing reputation in the performing arts, with students from St Joseph’s schools consistently making waves at both national and international levels,” he said.
Following that competition, the students had the opportunity to perform at a concert band exchange with SM Pay Fong in Melaka.
“This exchange allowed them to showcase their talents on a broader platform, enrich their experience and foster connections with fellow student musicians,” said Lo.
