KUCHING (Dec 14): Supporting temples and other places of worship through the Unit for Other Religions (Unifor) is not an extraordinary act but simply a way of life in Sarawak, said Stakan assemblyman Datuk Hamzah Ibrahim.

He said Sarawak’s strength lies in its people living for one another and wanting shared prosperity, regardless of race or religion.

“We want Sarawakians to live for each other and want prosperity for all Sarawakians.

“Our continued interaction and togetherness is essential for Sarawak to grow and progress together,” he said at the eighth anniversary dinner of the Persatuan Penganut Tokong Gong De Kuching here on Saturday.

He also reflected on his upbringing in the city, where he recalled growing up surrounded by temples and witnessing Chinese culture flourish.

This he said, had shaped his understanding of Sarawak’s unique multicultural fabric.

Earlier, Sarawak United People’s Party Stakan Branch chairman and honorary chairman of the temple Dato Sim Kiang Chiok extended his gratitude to the Persatuan Penganut Tokong Gong De Kuching for its vital role in the community over the past eight years.

He commended the association for its dedication to honouring traditions, praying for peace, and actively supporting the society through essential charity programmes, particularly food aid and welfare assistance.

“Your work reflects the moral values shared by all religions and communities, such as kindness, respect, harmony and service to others. These values are the foundation of Sarawak’s society.

“Sarawak is blessed with peace and stability because we respect one another’s beliefs and cultures. We celebrate diversity, but we move forward as one people. This is something very special, and it is something we must constantly protect,” he said.

Sim also acknowledged the support of the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government under Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, noting that initiatives such as Unifor ensure fair assistance to all religious organisations and help sustain interfaith harmony in the state.

During the event, Hamzah announced a grant of RM30,000 for Gong De Temple in recognition of the temple’s contributions and ongoing needs.

Also present were Padawan Municipal Council chairman Tan Kai, Persatuan Penganut Tokong Gong De Kuching chairperson Annie Yap and event organising chairman Boon Artine.
