Chong raising some issues during a briefing by Ministry of Finance on the implementation of Budi Diesel in Putrajaya on June 23, 2026.By DayakDaily Team
KUCHING, June 24: Stampin Member of Parliament (MP) Chong Chieng Jen has called for the monthly Budi Diesel subsidised fuel quota in Sarawak to be increased from 300 litres to 500 litres, while also urging the government to include tipper truck owners under the Controlled Diesel Subsidy System (SKDS) fleet card eligibility ahead of the nationwide rollout of the targeted subsidy system on July 1.
Chong, who is also Padungan assemblyman, said he attended a briefing yesterday (June 23) by the Ministry of Finance on the implementation of the Budi Diesel system, which replaces the blanket diesel subsidy in Sabah and Sarawak with a targeted subsidy mechanism aligned with the national subsidy rationalisation policy.
“Given the vastness of area in Sarawak and the reliance on diesel vehicles, the monthly quota of 300 litres would not be sufficient for those staying in the city outskirts.
“Furthermore, the current categories of recipients under the SKDS fleet card allowance do not include tipper truck owners carrying gravel, sand and earth,” he said in a statement today.
Chong said he had therefore pressed for the monthly quota to be increased to 500 litres for Sarawak users, and for tipper truck operators to be included under the subsidy framework, noting that this would help ease the burden of rising fuel costs once diesel prices are floated.
He also said he was informed that the Cabinet had already approved the implementation of the targeted subsidy system in Sarawak, with no objections raised by Sarawak ministers during the discussions, allowing the federal government to proceed with the rollout.
“Given that the ministers from Sarawak, sitting in Cabinet, has not objected to the implementation of the scheme in Sarawak, it will be implemented starting July 1, 2026,” he added.
Under the system, eligible diesel vehicle owners will receive a monthly quota of 200 litres of subsidised diesel priced at RM2.10 per litre, while pick-up truck and jeep owners may apply for an additional 100 litres.
In addition, logistics operators under the SKDS fleet card system will be entitled to subsidised diesel at different rates depending on vehicle type, with cargo lorries, rigid trucks, prime movers and panel vans able to purchase diesel at RM2.15 per litre, while public transport vehicles such as school buses, vans, buses and express buses will be eligible for RM1.88 per litre. — DayakDaily
