THE state is investing RM22 million to help 1,000 graduates enter the workforce in 2027, building on a state programme that has already enabled 61 per cent of participants to secure employment.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the Graduate Enhancement Training Sarawak (GETS) Work Readiness Programme would continue next year to strengthen graduates’ employability and prepare them for industry demands.
Under the State Budget 2027, each participant will receive a monthly allowance of RM1,500, alongside workplace skills training, industry-recognised certifications, leadership development and team-building opportunities.
The programme will offer employment exposure in both the public and private sectors, helping graduates bridge the gap between academic qualifications and workplace requirements.
As of July 2026, 61 per cent of participating graduates had secured employment, demonstrating the programme’s contribution towards improving graduate employability.

The allocation forms part of a broader RM454.34 million provision for education and talent development initiatives in 2027, reflecting the state government’s commitment to preparing its workforce for future economic needs.
Apart from that, Abang Johari also announced plans to establish a Sarawak Education Council to strengthen coordination and shape state education policies and programmes.
The council will serve as a strategic platform to align secondary education, science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) development, teacher training and tertiary education with the talent requirements of Sarawak’s strategic industries.
The initiative aims to ensure that education and skills development are closely aligned with the state’s economic priorities, while preparing local talent for emerging employment opportunities.
The council will also facilitate the development of international and tertiary education, with the ambition of positioning Sarawak as a regional education hub capable of attracting students and talent from beyond its borders.
