These simple steps help prevent leaks, fires and other incidents in the home, says Petros in a statement.

KUCHING (Feb 13): Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros) has issued safety tips for handling liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders ahead of the festive season.

“These simple steps help prevent leaks, fires and other incidents in the home,” said Petros in a statement.

The company advised all LPG users to regularly inspect regulators and hoses for cracks, wear or damage, and to use only SIRIM‑approved equipment. Cylinders should be stored in well‑ventilated areas, and kitchens should have adequate airflow during cooking.

Petros also recommended placing stoves slightly higher than the cylinder, and maintaining a safe distance of 1–1.5 metres between the cylinder and the cooking flame.

If a leak occurs, LPG will settle and accumulate near the floor, especially in low or enclosed areas, it said, adding that this increases the risk of ignition.

“If you smell gas or hear a hissing sound, turn off all flames immediately. Do not switch electrical appliances on or off. Open windows and doors to improve ventilation.

“If safe to do so, move the cylinder outdoors to a ventilated area. Keep clear of the floor area, where gas may have collected,” said Petros.

To check for leaks, users can apply soapy water to connection points — bubbles indicate a leak.

If detected, remove the regulator, move the cylinder to a ventilated area, and replace faulty parts only with approved components.

Petros also reminded users to light the ignition source before turning on the gas, and to switch off the burner and regulator immediately after cooking.

“Simple, routine checks play an important role in reducing safety risks,” it said.
