KANOWIT (Feb 28): The Chinese community in Machan must remain united and forward-looking as Sarawak accelerates its development agenda towards 2030.

This call was made by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian at the Chinese New Year 2026 celebration hosted by the village security and development committee (JKKK) of Kaum Cina Machan, with support from the Kanowit Chinese community.

“Ten years ago, when people said they were from Sarawak, others might look down on us. Today, when we say we are from Sarawak, people look up to us,” he said.

According to him, Sarawak is now widely recognised for its stability, economic strength and long-term planning,

However, the Deputy Premier also reminded the community that more work needed to be done, particularly in improving infrastructure such as roads, hospitals and schools.

“We still have to catch up in many areas. The development must continue, and it requires all of us to move forward together,” he added.

Meanwhile, Machan assemblyman Allan Siden Gramong expressed appreciation to Dr Sim for attending the event, describing it as a historic gathering for the Chinese community in the constituency.

“This is the first time, since I became the elected representative, that we are able to gather the Chinese community from Machan in this hall.

“I believe about 700 people are present today.”

Allan also thanked the JKKK Kaum Cina Machan for successfully organising the large-scale celebration.

The assemblyman also took the opportunity to raise several community issues, particularly concerning healthcare and infrastructure.

“Hospital Kanowit serves not only Machan, but also Ngemah. The waiting area for visitors is limited and at times, it can be very uncomfortable.

“We hope there could be improvements towards providing a proper space for patients and their families,” he said.

He also called for additional parking facilities at the hospital.

“Now almost every household has a car. We need more parking space to accommodate the increasing number of vehicles.”

In addition, Allan requested road resurfacing works on Taman Muhibah Kanowit, saying that the road condition was uneven.

“We hope there could be funding assistance to resurface the road for the benefit of the people,” he said.

Also present were Ngemah assemblyman Anyi Jana, Temenggong Dato Vincent Lau, Pemanca Leong Khing Hee, Sarawak United People’ Party (SUPP) Central Youth chief Councillor Kevin Lau, Kanowit District officer Cerisologo Sabut, and Kanowit police chief Junical Ujal.
