KUCHING, Feb 23: A strong earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale struck the waters off Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, at 12.57am today.

According to a statement by the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), the quake occurred at coordinates 7.0° North and 116.4° East, about 49km west of Kudat, Sabah.

The earthquake was recorded at a depth of 678km.

Tremors were felt in Sabah as well as in several areas in Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia.

However, MetMalaysia confirmed that there is no tsunami threat to Malaysia following the incident.

The department said it will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates if necessary.
