KOTA KINABALU (April 25): Institute for Development Studies (IDS) Sabah Chairman Datuk Seri Panglima Azizah Mohd Dun has called for sustained efforts to strengthen women’s leadership in the state, noting that female representation in leadership roles remains low.
She said a more comprehensive approach, supported by research and data, is needed to increase women’s participation in leadership.
Speaking at the Sabah Women Leadership Empowerment Workshop here yesterday, Azizah stressed that efforts should focus not only on increasing numbers but also on enhancing the quality and qualifications of women leaders.
“IDS has clear data and research findings that highlight the need to expand women’s participation in leadership, and we want to ensure women leaders are well-equipped with strong qualifications and competencies,” she said.
Azizah, who is also head of the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) Women’s Movement, said capable leaders must possess strong communication skills, a deep understanding of issues and thorough preparation in carrying out their responsibilities.
“Leaders must be clear in their communication, understand the issues they represent and always be well-prepared,” she said.
“Programmes such as this workshop are crucial as they provide practical training, including public speaking, group exercises and presentations,” she added.
She noted that leadership development involves nurturing values, knowledge and teamwork, while experience plays a vital role in building credibility and public trust.
“Leaders must be courageous in shouldering responsibilities. Preparation before attending programmes or delivering speeches reflects a leader’s intellectual readiness and commitment,” she said.
Azizah also emphasised the importance of continuous learning to remain relevant in a rapidly evolving world.
“Today’s world moves fast. We must continuously gain knowledge, understand current issues and be ready to adapt. The learning process never stops,” she said.
The workshop was attended by 35 participants comprising GRS women members from Kota Kinabalu, Putatan, Penampang and Sepanggar parliamentary constituencies.
