SIBU (April 9): All students should be encouraged to take up at least one sport as part of a holistic education and to balance academic achievement with physical development, said Temenggong Dato Vincent Lau.
The SMK Tung Hua School Board of Directors chairman said physical activities not only strengthen the body but also instil discipline, perseverance, teamwork, leadership and fair play.
“Sports provide an excellent platform for students to discover hidden talents, build confidence, and develop the resilience needed to face challenges both in school and in life,” he said at the opening of the school’s 50th annual sports meet at Stadium Tun Zaidi here yesterday.
Also present was school principal Goi Nguok Yew.
Lau said sports teach students to face challenges, overcome setbacks and strive for excellence, adding that Sarawak has produced many athletes who have represented the state and country with pride at national and international levels.
“It is our hope that through school-level sporting events such as today’s sports meet, we can inspire and nurture a new generation of athletes who will one day bring honour to their schools, their homeland and their nation,” he said.
He noted that in today’s competitive academic environment, many students devote much of their time on tuition classes, extra lessons, homework and examinations, resulting in reduced participation in sports and outdoor activities.
“Beyond competition, sports also serve as a powerful platform for building unity and friendship. They bring people from different backgrounds together, strengthen bonds and promote mutual respect and harmony within the community,” he said.
Lau described the 50th edition of the sports meet as a meaningful milestone in the school’s history, reflecting its longstanding commitment to sports development and holistic education.
He congratulated the school community and organising committee for their dedication in making the event a success.
He also urged parents and teachers to continue encouraging students’ involvement in sports alongside academic pursuits.
“Academic excellence is important, but the development of a healthy body, strong character and positive values is equally vital,” he said.
