KUCHING, April 11: The long-awaited proposed upgrading of the Stutong Link Road and Roundabout project, which will see the road expanded from two lanes to four lanes, is expected to move into the contractor appointment stage soon, with the tender set to close on May 6.

Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said the project, which has been closely followed by residents in the area for some time, has now reached the tender stage after earlier updates were announced last week.

“A tender briefing will be held on April 17, where contractors will be brought to the site to assess the project area and receive detailed explanations on the scope of works.

“The tender will close on May 6. After that, evaluation will be carried out, and we expect the contractor to be appointed once the process is completed,” he disclosed during his ShallWeeTalk live session today.

Wee added that the project scope includes upgrading approximately two kilometres of Jalan Stutong from a two-lane single carriageway to a four-lane dual carriageway built to JKR U5 standard.

“The roundabout will also be upgraded into a signalised intersection, while a 90-metre reinforced concrete (RC) bridge will be constructed across Sungai Stutong,” he explained.

Wee said the project will also involve drainage improvements, culvert works, as well as relocation and protection of utility infrastructure, including electricity and water lines.

He noted that while the tender process is progressing, the exact construction timeline will only be confirmed once the project is awarded and the contractor’s work schedule is finalised.

“This is something residents have been asking about online for a long time, and we are glad that it is finally moving forward,” he said, thanking the Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak for their updates and efforts in advancing the project.

Wee assured that MBKS will continue to provide updates to residents as the project progresses through the next stages of implementation. — DayakDaily
