KUCHING, Apr 7: The raw water intake project for the Suai Water Treatment Plant (LRA Suai), scheduled for full completion by September 2027 is set to reduce reliance on increasingly limited sources such as Sungai Teniku and Bukit Song in Miri while addressing long-standing low water pressure issues in Niah.
According to a report by the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS), Deputy Foreign Minister and Sibuti MP Dato Lukanisman Awang Sauni said the project will draw raw water directly from Sungai Suai, providing a more sustainable and reliable source to support water supply needs.
“The initiative is expected to stabilise supply, particularly in densely populated areas that have long faced disruptions due to low water pressure.
“The Suai water project, which started in October 2025, will be fully completed by September 2027, offering a lasting solution to Niah’s water supply needs,” he said.
Lukanisman noted that Subis district, home to more than 40,000 people across over 5,000 households, continues to face significant water pressure issues, underscoring the importance of the project. Upon completion, the LRA Suai project is expected to deliver more consistent and higher-quality water supply, while supporting future population growth.
He added that the Sarawak government remains committed to strengthening rural water infrastructure, including expanding similar approaches to areas such as Samalaju and Baram to ensure stable water supply across the State. — DayakDaily
