KUCHING, April 23: The decision on whether the 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) in Selangor will proceed as planned or be postponed will only be confirmed following a special meeting of the SUKMA Supreme Committee, scheduled for April 30.

In a TVS news, Youth and Sports Minister Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari said the ministry is still awaiting an official letter and feedback from the Selangor state government before any collective decision can be made involving all relevant stakeholders.

“At the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) level, no decision has been made as this matter must be decided collectively by the SUKMA Supreme Committee.

“This is because decisions related to SUKMA involve not only the ministry, but also state executive councillors, the National Sports Council, state sports councils, the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM), and other relevant bodies.

“Hence, the current approach is to gather input from all parties. I will be convening a special meeting of the SUKMA Supreme Committee on April 30,” he told a press conference after officiating the National High Performance Centre at the National Sports Institute (ISN) in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday (April 22).

He added that during this period, all stakeholders are encouraged to submit their views, including on funding matters previously decided by the Cabinet, which may be revisited for further discussion and improvement.

Last Monday, the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, decreed that the organisation of SUKMA 2026 be postponed.

His decree reflects concern over current global developments, particularly the energy crisis and geopolitical uncertainties, which have impacted the national economy and the overall cost of hosting the Games. — DayakDaily
