MIRI (Aug 17): Sabah karate squad today started off with a bang after winning one gold, one silver and three bronze at the Malaysia Games (Sukma) XXI individual kata and kumite categories at Institut Kemahiran Belia Negara (IKBN) Miri today.

The Sabah team celebrated their first gold here through Lovelly Anne Robberth who earned 39.2 points in the Women’s Individual Kata final against Brunei’s Farhah Syahirah Mohamad Shamrin (38.6 points).

Ph Ng Lebin of Penang, who defeated Sarawak’s Annabelle Ping Balan in the semi-final, and Bernice Low Yu Han of Perlis each took the bronze medal in the category.

In the Women’s 55kg Kumite final, Sabah took the silver medal through Adeola Fay Robert, after being defeated bySrikah Ganesh of Selangor.

Meanwhile, Fatin Najihah Baharuddin of Terengganu and Diviyah Ramesh of the Federal Territory each receive a bronze medal.

Sabah continued with its medal streak in the Mens’ Individual Kata event through Mohamad Haznil Henry who finished with a bronze medal, alongside Muhammad Aiqal Asmadie of the Federal Territory.

The gold medal for the category went to Song Chan Zhen of Penang, while the silver medal was Luqman Syah Ahmad Jasman Syah of Perak.

Sabah’s final bronze medal in today’s event was bagged by Muhammad Shafiedrullah Halim in the Men’s Kumite 60kg category.

Thevendran Kalianasundram of Johor also took home the bronze medal in the same category.

The gold medal for the Men’s Kumite 60kg category went to Krishnan Vellu of Kedah while Neelesh Kishor Suresh Kumar took the silver medal.

In the Men’s Individual Kumite 55kg category, the Federal Territory through Danesh Asyrraf Muhammad Nazri took the gold medal, while Awangku Ahmad Munib Aiman Md Hasimudin of Brunei finished with a silver medal.

Daniel Goria of Johor and Jeevesh Bhaskaran of Selangor each received a bronze medal.

For Women’s Individual Kumite 50kg cateogry, Vaissnari Samy of Johor took the gold medal, while Terengganu took the silver through Noor Aina Syamimi Mohamed.

Nilambigha Murugan of Kelantan and Nayana Ngirubagaran of the Federal Territory each settled for a bronze medal.

Meanwhile, Janardhan Thiagu of the Federal Territory won the gold medal in the Men’s Individual Kumite 67kg, while Leidaneswaran Asaithamby of Johor took the silver medal.

Pahang’s Noah Iskandar and Sabah’s Muhammad Akid Azlan each took the bronze medal in the category.

Apart from karate, Miri also hosts sailing, softball, fencing, pencak silat and rugby.
