SIBU (Aug 9): The Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Bukit Assek branch will distribute 2,000 free one-kilogramme Milo packs to male voters in Bukit Assek constituency tomorrow (Aug 10) and on Aug 11.

Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng said the event is meant to mark the ‘88’ Father’s Day, which falls on Aug 8.

“The distribution of Milo packs will take place at the Bukit Assek Service Centre from 9am to noon,” he said in a press conference yesterday.

Chieng invited male voters in the constituency to take the opportunity by turning up early and bringing their MyKad to collect the free packs.

“It will be based on a first-come first-served basis, until stock lasts,” he added.

In acknowledging the hardworking fathers in his constituency, he said fathers are the pillar of a family and that their dedication deserves gratitude.

“Through this event, we aim to express our deep respect and appreciation to all fathers. We would like to thank them for their hard work, and to wish them a Happy ‘88’ Father’s Day.”

According to Chieng, ‘88’ Father’s Day is a celebration rich in historical significance.

He said in 1945, to commemorate the fathers who sacrificed their lives during World War II in China, various social communities in Shanghai proposed Aug 8 as Father’s Day.

“The number ‘88’ in Chinese sounds like ‘Papa’, and it symbolises the greatness and selflessness of fathers.

“This day not only honours fatherly love but also echoes the traditional Chinese culture of filial piety,” he said, adding that embodying the virtue of filial piety is the foremost of all virtues.

To this day, he said regions such as China and Taiwan celebrate Father’s Day on Aug 8 each year.

Previously, in celebration of International Women’s Day on March 8, the Sarawak United People’s Party Bukit Assek branch and Bukit Assek Service Centre distributed 2,000 two-kilogramme bottles of cooking oil to female voters in the constituency.
