SIBU, June 4: The Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) is stepping up preparations for the upcoming Sarawak election, with a focus on defending its current seats while also targeting constituencies it has yet to secure.
In a TVS news, SUPP vice president Datuk Michael Tiang said the party has already identified several potential candidates who are actively engaging with grassroots communities in the targeted areas.
However, he stressed that the final decision on the candidate lineup rests with Sarawak Premier, who is also Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) chairman, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
“For seats we have yet to win, we already have potential candidates working hard on the ground. However, the final list will be decided by the GPS top leadership. GPS will contest all 82 seats, and our goal is to win every one of them,” he said.
He highlighted this at the 67th SUPP Anniversary Celebration and Flag-Raising Ceremony held at the party headquarters in Kampung Datu today.
Tiang, who is also Deputy Minister of Local Government, added that as a component party of GPS, SUPP will continue to champion Sarawak’s rights and interests under the Federal Constitution and the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), while maintaining a strong focus on delivering effective service to the people.
On Pelawan constituency, which he represents, he said groundwork has been ongoing since his first day as elected representative in December 2021, including strengthening the local service machinery.
“The service team in Pelawan has been mobilised from the very beginning to ensure the people continue to receive consistent and effective services,” he said.
He further emphasised that SUPP must stay true to its founding principles by prioritising the people’s welfare, remaining active on the ground, listening to community concerns, and addressing issues to ensure GPS stability and Sarawak’s continued progress. — DayakDaily
