KUCHING, April 15: Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) former Kuching branch chairman Datuk Lily Yong and former secretary Voong Nam Jin have submitted their appeal letters to the party headquarters on the deadline day today, following their expulsion from the party over the Kenyalang Gold Card (KGC) controversy.
According to Sin Chew Sarawak, about 15 leaders and members of the SUPP Kuching branch also turned up in solidarity, wearing T-shirts printed with the words “Solidarity with Lily Yong & Voong Nam Jin” to show their support.
Yong submitted the appeal letters on behalf of herself and Voong, which were received by an executive secretary at the party headquarters.
Speaking to the media afterwards, Yong said the grounds for the appeal had been fully set out in the letter and she was not in a position to disclose further details at this stage.
“I don’t know what will happen next. Everything will be handled according to the party constitution. We leave it to them and just hope for justice,” she said.
She also expressed deep appreciation for the support shown by her supporters.
It is understood that the SUPP Kuching branch will hold a meeting tonight to discuss the matter.
The expulsion by the SUPP Central Working Committee (CWC) stemmed from allegations linked to the KGC programme. Both Yong and Voong were issued expulsion notices on March 16 and were given 30 days to appeal to the party’s Central Committee, with the deadline falling today, around April 15 or 16.
The expulsions are believed to be connected to a complaint dated July 3, 2025, involving alleged irregularities in relation to the KGC programme, a Sarawak government initiative providing benefits and discounts to senior citizens.
On July 2, 2025, the SUPP Kuching branch issued a public statement saying it would not be held responsible for actions by certain members allegedly involved in improper practices in the application and issuance of the welfare cards, following suspicions of falsification.
The matter was subsequently reported to the Welfare Department and party leadership, and later highlighted by the Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak, which lodged a police report over alleged misuse of data in the application and distribution of counterfeit or non-compliant cards. — DayakDaily
