MIRI (Dec 21): Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) has expressed deep concern over a ban on Christmas decorations at halal-certified premises in Melaka, stating that such an issue should never arise in Malaysia.

SUPP Pujut youth chief Kelvin Hii warned that continuous arguments over religious and racial matters could damage the nation’s image and hinder its development.

“Christmas is no longer merely a religious symbol, but has become an international festive celebration,” he said in a statement.

“Many countries embrace Christmas with an open perspective, symbolising the year’s end and welcoming the New Year ahead.”

He noted that even traditionally conservative countries like Dubai, China, Iraq, and Japan, now display Christmas decorations for tourism and commercial reasons.

“Christmas decorations do not cause tourists or the public to perceive a restaurant or dining establishment as a religious venue; rather, they may attract new customers,” Hii emphasised.

“Halal certification should focus on food authentication, not decoration restrictions.”

“If a restaurant is concerned about affecting its food quality, it can choose not to decorate. However, using restrictions to limit all certified restaurants is an overreaction that unfairly affected everyone,” he said.

The vice chairman of SUPP Central Youth said he felt fortunate that under the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government, Sarawak faces no such restrictions.

“Sarawak continues to maintain mutual respect and tolerance, enabling it to focus on development rather than debating racial or religious issues,” he said.

He highlighted that in Sarawak, people of different races and religions dine together and participate in various annual processions such as Christmas parades, Maulidur Rasul, and Wesak Day, where even non-followers can learn about other cultures.

“As Christmas approaches, government departments, hospitals, police stations, schools, and restaurants across Sarawak proudly display decorations, genuinely reflecting a spirit of diversity.

“Celebrating together, living harmoniously, and practising mutual tolerance are why Sarawakians take great pride in being part of this community,” he said.
