KUCHING, June 25: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and Sarawak police have busted a syndicate linked to stolen telecommunications equipment during Ops Lusuh, an integrated operation conducted from June 18 to 19 in Kuching, Padawan and Kota Samarahan.
In a TVS news, enforcement teams, acting on intelligence, raided a premises in Kota Samarahan believed to have been used as a storage site for illegally obtained telecommunications equipment as part of the coordinated operation.
According to MCMC, inspections uncovered various telecommunications components, including base station batteries and Remote Radio Units (RRUs), believed to belong to licensed telecommunications companies and suspected of being unlawfully acquired.
“Two individuals were detained by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) Sarawak Contingent to assist investigations, while all seized items were confiscated as evidence,” it said in a statement on Wednesday (June 24).
MCMC stressed that theft and vandalism of telecommunications infrastructure are serious offences that can disrupt network services and affect critical communications relied upon by the public.
Offenders may be prosecuted under Section 235 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588), which provides for penalties of up to RM500,000 in fines, imprisonment of up to five years, or both upon conviction.
The agency added that collaboration between MCMC, the Sarawak PDRM Contingent, and the Sarawak Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication (MUT) will continue to be strengthened to safeguard the security, stability, and resilience of the nation’s communications network.
Members of the public are urged to report any suspicious activity involving telecommunications assets to the authorities to help curb such crimes. — DayakDaily
