SIBU (Feb 19): Sarawak Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Datuk Michael Tiang has pledged to push for improvements to Sibu’s road network and traffic flow, citing congestion as a priority issue this year.
Speaking at the Chinese New Year Open House hosted by the Teochew Association Sibu, Tiang said he and his team would utilise available resources and development allocations to enhance the town’s road system.
“I understand Sibu has certain road conditions and traffic system problems. That is why we have congestion.
“My team and I will use our resources and projects to modify and improve our road system in Sibu to resolve traffic flow issues,” he said.
Drawing inspiration from the Year of the Horse, Tiang encouraged the community to embrace progress and dynamism.
“I wish all of you happiness and prosperity. In this Year of the Horse, let us use the spirit of the horse to move forward with strength and determination,” he added.
Tiang also commended the association for its strong commitment to preserving Teochew traditions and culture.
“I have participated in many of their events. Every time I take part in Teochew programmes, it opens my eyes and I learn a lot about Teochew traditions.
“I am very happy that they continue to pass on these traditions from generation to generation,” he said.
Earlier, association chairman Kapitan Su Ngio Kee described the presence of Tiang and SUPP Youth chief Councillor Kelvin Lau as a historic and meaningful occasion.
“We are deeply honoured by the presence of Tiang and Lau, who despite their demanding responsibilities, have graciously come to our association to extend their festive greetings.
“Your visit will be remembered as a significant milestone in the history of our association,” he said.
Su said the visit reflected not only the leaders’ commitment to serving the people but also their respect for cultural traditions and heritage.
He expressed appreciation for the leaders’ unwavering support in fostering community development and preserving cultural heritage.
“Community organisations serve as vital bridges between government and society.
“In the years ahead, we pledge to continue fulfilling this role, ensuring that government policies reach every corner of the community while also conveying the voices of the people back to the government,” he said.
He also noted that in Chinese tradition, the horse symbolises progress, loyalty, and a pioneering spirit, expressing hope that Sibu would continue to advance towards a brighter future.
Also present were the association’s adviser Tay Kwong Hui and fellow members of Teochew Association Sibu.
