KUCHING (March 2): Sarawak’s transformation since 2014 reflects a broader vision of progress, empowerment and identity, said Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Tan Kai, as he underscored the role of sports in supporting the state’s development agenda.
Tan, who represented Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian at the soft opening of Jun Lun Professional Wushu Training Centre’s new training centre at Pines Square, Batu Kawa on Saturday, noted that Sarawak has entered a new era marked by stronger awareness of its rights and equal standing within Malaysia, alongside rapid economic and social advancement.
According to him, the Sarawak government has accelerated its development strategy by focusing on new growth areas such as renewable energy and carbon reduction as well as high-value industries including semiconductors and aerospace.
“In moving towards a high-income and sustainable economy, we need not only strong governance but also a healthy and resilient society,” he said.
In this regard, Tan emphasised that sports development especially wushu plays an important role in nurturing disciplined, healthy and competitive individuals who can contribute meaningfully to the state’s progress.
The opening of the new training centre, he remarked, is timely as it served not only as a platform to produce medal-winning athletes but also as a centre to promote overall well-being.
“It is not just about winning competitions but about building strength, character and health among our people, in line with Sarawak’s aspirations,” he pointed out.
Tan also commended Sarawak’s wushu athletes for their consistent achievements at international competitions, bringing pride to the state through their medal-winning performances.
“You have made Sarawak proud on the world stage and your dedication reflects the spirit of excellence we strive for,” he said as a tribute to the athletes, coaches and supportive parents.
He expressed hope that the new training centre will become a key hub for developing future champions while strengthening Sarawak’s position in the sport.
“With continued support and proper facilities, we believe Sarawak can produce more outstanding athletes in the years to come,” he said.
Also present were Sarawak Sports Corporation acting head of sports development division Dedia Sarini Ahmad, sports development officer Eqa Eqma Bujang Adris, Wushu Federation of Sarawak (WFS) president Allen Wong Siew Poh, deputy president James Ting Ing Seek and vice presidents Lydia Ling Ung Hee and Lucas Lim Tee Kiat who is president of Jun Lun Professional Wushu Training Centre.
